Memory
Brain injury may kindle some of your curiosity,
But you will never fully know
What it is to be
Without your memory.
“Know” in the Biblical sense,
Has to do with what you experience.
You can approach understanding
With the kindling empathy -
I will tell you what I experience,
To help you try to reach through
That awkward fence.
In my past…
Yesterdays,
Even today's,
Slipped by with only glimpses to grasp.
Recall names, incidents or locations of things,
Please - just don’t ask.
Severity of loss
Will decrease all and all,
But at least a touch of this burden,
Is around for the long haul.
I’ve learned that memory is specific,
The array is vast.
Types of memory
Need to be defined,
For between functions,
Is a distinct solid line:
Short term, Episodic, Autobiographical,
Long term, Prospective, Semantic and Procedural.
(For more info, see
book's glossary)
How is memory affected?
Some kinds may be devastated,
While others remain intact,
Recall can become cloudy,
Thinking unclear,
Sometimes I feel not fit -
But that’s life,
I’ve just come to deal with it!
It’s an issue for me,
To try and remember where things are.
Sometimes I close my eyes,
And just wish on the night’s star.
I’ve given a new name
To the King of Kings -
It is "Ultimate Retriever of Lost Things”!
Regarding my loss,
I try & look at it positively
And see it straight,
My stumbling with memory
Has led me to
A true stepping up of faith.
